Ubuntu 8.04: The Hardy Heron

Well I couldn’t resist it, could I? A new release of Ubuntu and the old Gutsy Gibbon or version 7.10 has been swept away and I’ll doubtless face a whole new range of problems as well as the ones I’m already familiar with from the earlier version. Already I’ve run into a little trouble in the form of an inability to download the drivers for my NVidia FX 5500 256Mb graphics card. It worked fine before but clearly the driver hasn’t been updated for the new version of the operating system. I’m surely the problem will be rectified shortly but in the meantime I’m stuck with the basic desktop and can’t activate any of the cool special effects that are possible.

Even though it is supposedly possible to update from 7.10 to 8.04, this didn’t work for me. The Update Manager wasn’t add to fetch the necessary files so I’ve started with a fresh installation. The download comes with the new Firefox 3 (Beta 5) already installed and so far it’s been more stable than the earlier release. Normally the browser would have crashed by now but so far it hasn’t. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, I’ll look forward to some DVD and Flash problems but I’ll least I have a little more experience in how to deal with them this time around.
