Firefox Flash Crash

I’ve had no end of trouble recently with Firefox crashing whenever flash content is being displayed. Apparently, it’s been an ongoing problem with Firefox and Ubuntu over the years because there are posts I’ve come across dating back to 2005. I came across a post here that claims to fix the problem. The advice is basically to download the flash plug-in directly from Macromedia and then install it. The Synaptic Download Manager apparently doesn’t handle the installation properly. I’ve done this but it remains to be seen how effective it is. I’ve put my Ubuntu PC to bed and am now working on my laptop that runs Windows Vista.

I have to say that really I’ve had zero problems with Vista whereas Ubuntu just keeps serving up problems. So far I’ve had problems with playing DVDs (solved), getting Google Earth to run (not solved) and crashes in Firefox when accessing flash content (maybe solved). To be fair there is a lot of help on the Ubuntu forums and eventually the problems do get sorted out if you persevere. For most non-technical users however, I’d have to advise them against adopting Linux unless they have a techie friend who can help sort out any problems. I really want to give Ubuntu a fair trial and so I’m sticking with it but I’ve certainly been frustrated at times.
