VLC to the Rescue

The Totem Movie Player that comes with Ubuntu when you download the operating system is a dead loss when it comes to playing DVDs. No amount of downloading of additional files on my part could get it to play a DVD, all it would say was that the necessary codecs were missing but it did not identify them. I was ready to give up when I came across a reference to the VLC player and remembered that it was an open source program that I had used in Windows. I downloaded the Ubuntu version of the player and it played a DVD without any problems. I wished I had done it earlier and saved myself a lot of wasted time. The good news however, is that I can now play DVDs.
