Ubuntu Uber Alles

Well, I must say that so far so good with Ubuntu 7.10. Neither the music nor the DVD played out of the box but I was prompted each time for suitable codecs that were quickly downloaded and installed. So far I’ve managed to play an MP3 file, a WMA file and a DVD using the Movie Player. The Rhythmbox Music Player that I tried first up initially refused to play any music and didn’t offer to download any codecs. Now that they are downloaded however, it will now play music.

Before the codecs are downloaded, a warning is displayed informing that the downloads may be illegal in some countries. This is the reason I guess that music and DVDs don’t play out of the box because the Ubuntu distributors can’t offer the download with these codecs already included. My 256Mb NVidia card is powerful enough to display all the graphical effects that the OS is capable of and these are fairly impressive.

I’ll move on to Bluetooth and the Webcam soon but for now, having just watched a very strange movie called Slip Stream, I’m heading off to bed. That’s enough progress for one night.
