Gutsy Gibbon Installed
I now have Ubuntu 7.10, the Gutsy Gibbon, installed and the additional 204 additional components have been downloaded from the Internet. I started up Firefox in order to make an entry in this blog. I was immediately prompted for a plug-in for Firefox and had to choose between Adobe Flash Player or GNASH SWF Player. I chose the latter of course to minimise the presence of proprietary software and so after restarting Firefox to activate the plug-in, I’m ready to resume my adventures. But not tonight. Tonight is my birthday and so I’ll leave the challenges of playing DVDs and MP3s until the weekend.
I need to download Skype again of course and the firewall software that I’d installed on the Feisty Fawn. The new installation wipes everything clean. I guess that this time I should copy all my downloaded software to an external storage device for when I upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu. A major lesson I’ve learned is to not use the update option that’s available from within Ubuntu. It simply didn’t work for me and it takes a hell of a long time to find it out. After my last unsuccessful attempt, the update attempt seemed to have been reversed but the next time I tried to boot to Ubuntu, I couldn’t. Booting to Windows was still possible however.
