Ajax Windows

I came across an interesting application at http://www.ajaxwindows.com that allows you to create a web-based desktop that can be accessed from any computing device with access to the Internet. Your virtual desktop replicates the computer-based equivalent with My Computer, My Documents, My Music, My Pictures as well as links to a range of web-based applications and services such as GoogleDocs and ajaxPresents, Delicious, Picassa, Flickr, Blogger, YouTube etc.

It’s all free and very easy to use and represents the Internet of the future where all data will be stored online and all applications will be web-based (thin-client computing as it’s called). You can drop and drop files on your PC into your virtual desktop folders, so there’s no painful FTP uploading or even any need to go through the easier but still tedious browsing, locating and uploading of files.

It also features widgets that can perform various little functions from games such as Circular Tetris to programs that create 3-D representations of mathematical functions. I’ve tried to create something similar using a page in GooglePages as my home page and coordinating things from there. AjaxWindows of course is far more sophisticated than this and I’ll certainly be making extensive use of it. You can launch your browser from within the virtual deskop as you would from your normal PC-based desktop.
