GCast

I came across the site www.gcast.com yesterday and thought I’d give it a test run. The site seems to make podcasts very easy to set up. It requires the sound file be in MP3 format that has been recorded at 44.1 kHz. Unfortunately, OneNote doesn’t record at that high a frequency but it was easy enough to record a suitable sound file using Audacity. Once you’ve recorded your audio file, you upload it to GCast and an additional, lower quality recording is automatically created for those who may be accessing via a dial-up connection.

Listeners can subscribe to your podcast using iTunes, Google Reader etc. and the sound file can be embedded into another blog as I’m doing here. Let’s see how it works out:

It didn’t quite work out as I hoped. The player doesn’t actually appear, only the link to it. Not to worry. I can work on that little problem. The location of my podcasting site is here by the way. The entire process is a lot easier that what I described back in October on this blog. In the post, I recommended Vudyo as the audio file storage location but my Year 11 students told me that it took a long time to upload files to that site and in any case, the intermediate step involving FeedBurner is not necessary when using GCast.
